“Somakusha”

Tennoji Bugaku is a traditional performing art that has been practiced at Shitennoji Temple for more than a thousand years since its origins in gigaku, a form of drama and dance performance introduced to Japan from continental Asia and adopted by Prince Shotoku to provide solemn Buddhist music. We hope you will enjoy this historical dance and music performance, which is still performed at memorial services in Shitennoji, including at the Shoryo-e, the memorial service commemorating the prince’s death.

Mount Seiryo in China is a sacred place where high priests train for ultimate enlightenment.
There is a long, narrow, mossy stone bridge over the mountain. Here, sacred lions of a parent and children, perform a vigorous dance as they frolic in the face of human impossibility.

But now the Kumo-zoku are planning to attack the Yamato to regain power.

Production and General Director

Kanze School Noh performer and
a Living National Treasure
Otsuki Bunzo

Born in Osaka in 1942, he studied under his grandfather Otsuki Juzo, his father Otsuki Hideo, and also under Kanze Hisao and Kanze Tetsunojo VIII.
He made his debut on the Noh stage in Kurama Tengu in 1947, and his most notable performances include Higaki in 1998, Sekiji Komachi in 2007, and Obasute in 2012. He has also been actively involved in staging many revivals and new Noh plays.

Grand Head Temple Shitennoji Temple

Founded by Prince Shotoku Taishi, Shitennoji is Japan’s oldest officially administered temple, and is the head temple of Wa Sect of Buddhism. The buildings, consisting of the Chumon or main gate, the five-storied pagoda, the Kondo or main hall, and the Kodo or lecture hall, are arranged in the so-called Shitennoji-style, considered one of the oldest architectural styles in Japan, in a straight line from south to north and surrounded by corridors.

  • The ticket is valid for one performance only on the date and time indicated on the ticket and for one person per ticket.

  • The event may be suspended temporarily or cancelled in the middle of it if it rains during the event. Tickets will not be refunded after the newly-created Noh “Kiriaoi” isperformed even if the rest of the show is cancelled.

Related event

Japanese beauty in the form of the
two traditional arts of Noh and Bugaku
will descend into the Gokuraku-Jodo Garden.

Noh is a classical Japanese musical and dance drama performed by masked actors to the accompaniment of music and chanting, while Bugaku is a musical and dance drama performed by dancers and performed by musicians. Through the use of masks, costumes, and various props, we will introduce the Japanese beauty of these two artistic realms, both of which are considered to have been closely linked to Prince Shotoku. Please enjoy the enchanting exhibition you will experience as you stroll through the Gokuraku-Jodo Garden, or the Garden of the Paradise of Amitabha’s Pure Land.
